Hello, I'm Yuto Takashi. As a specialist in reflection who transforms worries and anxieties into positive action, I conduct research on organizational theory, develop web services related to reflection, and host workshops.

In this article, I'll explore "The Future of Work and Reflection: Toward Human-Centered Organizations," examining the nature of work and organizations that will be required in the coming era from the perspective of reflection.

The Role of Humans in the AI Era

In recent years, the development of AI (Artificial Intelligence) has been dramatically changing how we work and how organizations operate. As President Teruo Fujii stated at the University of Tokyo's entrance ceremony in April 2023, the importance of "experiential learning" is increasing in the AI era.

As AI continues to evolve daily, what are the capabilities that only humans possess? They are the power to learn through experience, demonstrate creativity, and solve complex problems. And to maximize these capabilities, "reflection" is the key.

    How Reflection Enhances Work Engagement

Reflection is not simply about looking back at the past—it's a process of deepening self-understanding and finding guidelines for future action. Research has shown that practicing reflection at work improves "work engagement."

Employees with high work engagement demonstrate the following characteristics:

    • They approach their work with enthusiasm
    • They persistently tackle difficult challenges
    • They take initiative toward achieving organizational goals

By deepening self-understanding through reflection, you can recognize your strengths and values and apply them to your work. As a result, job satisfaction and productivity improve, and the overall performance of the organization increases.

Three Approaches to Human-Centered Organization Building

So how can we specifically promote human-centered organization building? Here, I propose three approaches.

    1. Incorporate Teal Organization Principles

Teal organizations represent an autonomous, continuously evolving organizational model that transcends traditional hierarchical structures.

    Characteristics of Teal Organizations:

    • Self-management: Members make autonomous decisions
    • Wholeness: An environment where individuals can fully demonstrate their capabilities
    • Evolutionary purpose: The organization's purpose evolves with the times

In Teal organizations, reflection plays an important role. When each member deepens their self-understanding and connects the organization's purpose with their own values, more creative and effective decision-making becomes possible.

    2. Utilize One-on-One Meetings

One-on-one meetings are regular dialogue sessions between supervisors and their team members. By leveraging these opportunities, you can build trust and promote learning.

Key points for effective one-on-one meetings:

    • Conduct them regularly (e.g., once a week, 30 minutes)
    • Maintain open dialogue
    • Listen carefully and ask appropriate questions
    • Pose questions that encourage reflection

Through one-on-one meetings, you can support member growth and foster a learning culture throughout the organization.

    3. Apply the ORIMD Framework

The ORIMD framework is a tool for supporting effective reflection. By using this framework, you can promote deeper self-understanding and behavioral change.

The five elements of the ORIMD framework:

    1. Objective (Facts): Confirm objective facts
    2. Reflective (Emotions): Explore feelings and reactions
    3. Interpretative (Interpretation): Examine your interpretation of the situation
    4. Meaning (Meaning): Assign meaning to the experience
    5. Decisional (Decision): Decide on next actions

By incorporating this framework into daily work and one-on-one meetings, you can establish a more effective cycle of reflection and learning.

A Tool for Making Reflection a Habit: RefCla

Even if you understand the importance of reflection, many people find it difficult to make it a habit. That's why I'd like to introduce "RefCla," a web service developed by TIELEC.

RefCla is a tool that supports daily reflection and helps transform worries and anxieties into positive action. It's designed based on the ORIMD framework and guides you through effective reflection.

Summary: Human-Centered Organization Building Starts with Reflection

In the AI era, human creativity and problem-solving abilities are becoming increasingly important. And reflection is essential to maximize these capabilities.

Keep the following points in mind for human-centered organization building:

    1. Incorporate Teal organization principles and promote autonomous decision-making
    2. Utilize one-on-one meetings to build trust and a learning culture
    3. Practice effective reflection using the ORIMD framework
